Pippa is a 2022 Indian Malayalam crime thriller film directed by R. Chandru. It stars Kichcha Sudeep, Ileana D’Cruz, Mrunal Thakur and Priya Anand in key roles. Pippa is a remake of the highly acclaimed 2019 Tamil movie Ratsasan. The film released in theatres on 9th December 2022. Here is a detailed Pippa movie review covering the film’s story, performances, technical aspects and overall analysis.
Pippa Movie Story
Pippa follows ACP Arun Kumar (Sudeep), an aspiring police officer whose applications get rejected multiple times due to his stuttering issue. Amidst this, there is a serial killer on the loose abducting and murdering young girls in the city. Despite their best efforts, the cops are unable to find any clue about the murderer’s identity. Things get personal for Arun when the killer kidnaps his own sister. A determined Arun takes it upon himself to crack this case by delving into the psyche of the serial killer. The engrossing cat-and-mouse chase forms the crux of Pippa’s story.
Pippa Movie Review – Performances
Kichcha Sudeep, as expected, delivers an outstanding performance as Arun Kumar. He portrays the character’s stuttering problem and emotional trauma with utmost conviction after his sister goes missing. Sudeep excels during the investigation scenes as he gets into the mindset of the serial killer.
Ileana D’Cruz puts up a sincere act as Arun’s supportive wife Reji. Though she has limited screen time, she provides good support to Sudeep’s character. Mrunal Thakur impresses in her extended cameo as Arun’s sister Annie. She is quite effective in the few emotional scenes she gets.
Priya Anand has a meaty role as Sub-Inspector Vijaya Kumari, who assists Arun in the investigation. She provides a confident performance and shares good chemistry with Sudeep. The supporting cast comprising Aftab Shivdasani, Sharath Lohitashwa and others give decent performances.
Pippa Movie Review – Technical Aspects
On the technical front, Pippa delivers top-notch quality work starting with the remarkable cinematography by Naveen Chandakkar. He captures the moods and emotions perfectly through his lens work. The investigation scenes and action sequences are shot very slickly.
Deepu S. Kumar’s sharp editing maintains a tight grip on the narrative that keeps viewers engaged. The background score by Arjun Janya and B. Ajaneesh Loknath helps amp up the tension and mystery elements. Production design by Rajath Poddar and art direction are also top notch, beautifully recreating the urban setting.

Pippa Movie Review – Direction
R. Chandru, who directed the original Tamil version Ratsasan as well, does a fairly good job adapting the film for Malayalam audiences. He builds an intriguing narrative surrounding the serial killer that keeps one hooked for most parts. Chandru succeeds in creating effective red herrings to confuse viewers about the murderer’s identity. The climax confrontation is executed very well.
However, the romantic track between Sudeep and Ileana D’Cruz seems a bit forced. The stuttering problem angle also appears slightly melodramatic at times. But Chandru manages to deliver an engaging thriller with enough twists and turns to keep viewers guessing.
